Victims of Tragedies
Grave of Bessie Tomlin, 1937 Flood Victim, Portsmouth, Ohio
Bessie Tomlin, Sept. 12, 1910 -- Jan. 25, 1937. The only victim in Portsmouth, Ohio of the great Ohio River Flood in 1937 when the river crested at 74 feet. Mrs. Tomlin's rescue boat overturned at 10th and Waller Sts., but she was able to hold 18-month-old Alberta out of the water until fireman Lt. Walter Chick could grab her; then Mrs. Tomlin disappeared beneath the water.
