Apples
Field Notes on Apples, Sauk County, Wisconsin
2016 Farm/Art DTour. "Originating in central Asia, and among the first trees to be cultivated, apples have spread around the world as an important perennial fruit crop. Apples were first brought to North America in the early 1600s. In the late 1800s Sauk County and the Baraboo Hills became an important center for the development of apple orchards in Wisconsin. More than 17,000 kinds of apples were once grown across the country. Different varieties were used for eating, baking, juicing, and brewing into "hard" cider. Much of this diversity has been lost over the last century, as only a few apple types came to dominate the commercial market. Growing interest in heirloom apples has led to efforts to reclaim and conserve our apple heritage."
